No travel – #stayhome

Who would have ever thought they would find themselves in a situation in which practically all travel is banned. I sure didn’t. When this whole Corona virus thing started, I brushed it off like a nasty flu. But at this point I’m pretty sure everyone will agree it’s not just a flu. It’s a pandemic, and it needs to be contained as much as possible.

I completely understand why the current measures are in place. I haven’t left my house in almost 5 weeks, only for groceries and my daily walks or runs, but that’s about it. I’m working from home for that same amount of time. And even though I’m allowed to go out for bike rides, I choose to do most of them on the bike trainer at home. I’m not an “essential worker”, as they call it, so I’ll do my part by following the rules as much as possible.

So I already postponed one of the three trips I had planned. The second one might be canceled or postponed as well. I’m well aware this is a first-world / luxury problem, but I did feel a little bit sad, to be honest.

We were supposed to be in Portugal in March. Four days of wandering around Porto, some sightseeing, eating delicious food, relax…

Ahh, the memories: Travel is my happy place – Pisa, Italy.

Luckily we were able to reschedule our flight to September. Our hotel, which was a non-refundable booking, did us the favor by cancelling without charge. Of course we will rebook that very same hotel again when we will (hopefully) go there in September.

Then there’s my solo trip to New York. A Travel Bucket List trip which I booked a couple of months ago, in the spur of the moment.

My friend moved to Pennsylvania about a year ago, so it will be a combination of meeting up with him and his wife, and some New York sight-seeing. This trip is in June, but I think I’ll have to postpone it, looking at the current situation in the New York as well as The Netherlands. We’ll have to wait and see…

As much as I like to travel, this is not the time I would want to be abroad. But I sure as hell can’t wait for things to turn back to normal. Of course the whole travelling thing is just a minor inconvenience in comparison to everything that is happening right now. But still.

Anyway: I’m doing my part by staying home as much as possible. Please, you do yours so we can get rid of this virus, once and for all.
