There are a lot of things which inspire me to travel and to visit new places. One of them? Movies. Movies are always a nice way to spend an evening. Or a long flight. Or a random rainy day. But it’s not always travel movies which make you want to visit certain places. Sometimes it’s just a random movie which is filmed in a gorgeous location. But to be honest: my list does contain travel movies for the most part.
>> I already made a part 2 travel movies. << Check them out! <<
So if you are looking for some travel movies to fill up a dull evening, I can definitely recommend these ones:
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel
Plot: This is probably one my all time favourite travel movies. It’s about a bunch of British retirees who travel to India, all of them for their own specific reasons. One couple is completely broke because they’ve invested money in their daughter’s business, which didn’t work out well. One lady finds out her late husband has left her with debt. One lady needs hip surgery, which can be done way faster and cheaper in India. Some are travelling to India for love. And so on. The Best Exotic Marigold hotel is where they are all staying, but it turns out not be the oasis of luxury and peace it was supposed to be. It’s still under construction. Along the way everyone learns to cope with the hectic life in India.
Stars: Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy and Dev Patel
This movie makes you want to visit: India of course. I’ve always wanted to visit the country, but after seeing this movie (about 5 times), it’s pretty much on the top of my travel bucket list.
IMDB Score: 7.3.
Plot: In the life of Cheryl Strayed, everything seems to fall apart. Her marriage ends, she’s addicted to drugs and her mother dies. She decides to hike the Pacific Crest Trail, a 1000 miles, to come to terms with everything that has happend. Without proper preparation she’s off for her adventure of a lifetime. Along the way she not only has to fight the physical battle to complete the trail, but mostly an emotional battle to find peace.
Stars: Reese Witherspoon, Laura Dern
This travel movie makes you want to visit: Well, not particularly a country, but it mostly makes me want to go on a long hike again. I love hiking, a lot. I can actually see myself completing such a long trail in the future.
IMDB score: 7.1
A Good Year
Plot: The story is about a London investment banker, named Max Skinner, who basically only thinks about work and money. He learns about the death of his uncle, Uncle Henry, who owns a vineyard and chateau in the south of France. Max has spent a great part of his childhood in that chateau, and he appears to be the one living family member who inherits the property. He travels to France in order to arrange selling the property. Due to some problems, he is staying a bit longer than anticipated, and he gets the chance to relive old memories. Suddenly, a long lost daughter of Uncle Henry shows up at the door step, which interrupts his plans of selling the property…
Stars: Russell Crowe & Marion Cotillard
This movie makes you want to visit: France. Just to enjoy the food and the wine. Nothing but eating and drinking, all day long.
IMDB score: 6.9
Lord of the Rings – The Fellowship of the Ring
Plot: This is the first part of a trilogy, written by JR Tolkien, which depicts the life of Frodo Baggins, a Hobbit who gets burdened with the task of bringing back an ancient ring to Mount Doom where it was created, and to destroy it. The ring belongs to the dark lord Sauron, who will conquer the world if it falls in his hands. Luckily he doesn’t have to do this quest all by himself. He is joined by Gandalf the wizard, Gimli the dwarf, Legolas the elf, Boromir, Aragorn and his three hobbit friends Samwise, Merry & Pippin.
Stars: Ian McKellen, Elijah Wood, Orlando Bloom & Liv Tyler.
This travel movie makes you want to visit: A big part of the film was shot in New Zealand. Some parts of the set are still there, so you are actually able to visit (& even sleep in) Hobbiton. Mount Doom in the movies is Mount Ngarahoe in real life, and you an also visit Rivendell, the city of the elves. There are complete tours you can take, to visit a lot of the actual filming locations of Lord of the Rings. How awesome is that?
IMDB score: 8.8
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty
Plot: Walter Mitty works at a magazine called Life. He’s in charge of the photo negatives and works closely with photographer Sean O’Connell. Walter lives a pretty dull life, but loves to daydream about great adventures and travels. One day, the staff of the magazine receive the news that Life will live on as an online magazine. The last offline issue must be perfect, and he is instructed by O’Connell that he should use photo #25 for the final issue of Life. But that negative is missing. Walter decides to go find Sean O’Connell in order to retrieve negative #25, by using the other negatives as clues to where he’s located. It brings him the adventure he has always daydreamed about.
Stars: Ben Stiller, whose movies I generally don’t like that much. But this is an exception.
This movie makes you want to visit: Iceland. Although Walter visits Greenland as well, these shots are also filmed in Iceland.
IMDB score: 7.3
I have many more of these travel movies which are worth sharing, so you might be able to read a part 2 soon 🙂
