Travel movies are always a nice way to spend a comfy night in. I already made a favourite travel movies part 1, but I thought it would be nice to make a part 2 as well. Because there are so many movies which make you want to pack your bags in the blink of an eye. Some movies aren’t even really about travelling, but they have been filmed in locations which are definitely worth visiting.
Here we go:
Into the wild
Plot: According to many people, one of the best travel movies ever. After graduating from University, Chris McCandless, who is actually a top student and very good athlete, makes a life changing decision. Instead of starting a carreer, he abandons all of his possessions and gives away all of his money and life savings to charity. He then goes on an adventure of a lifetime by hitchhiking all the way north, to Alaska, to live in the wilderness.
Stars: Emile Hirsch, Vince Vaugh, Kristen Stewart, and it’s directed by Sean Penn.
This movie makes you want to visit: not really a particular destination, but it makes you want to disconnect from society and technology, even for just a moment. Just you and nature.
IMDB score: 8.1
Plot: Richard is a typical backpacker in Thailand. When he’s in Bangkok, he meets the completely whacked-out Daffy. Before this strange man commits suicide, he gives Richard a map which supposedly leads to tropical, solitary beach. A true paradise. However, a group of fellow travellers have already settled in, so he has to fit in with the group, which is more difficult than he thinks. And then there are natives who grow marihuana nearby, who are not very keen on company.
Stars: Leonardo DiCaprio, Tilda Swinton
This movie makes you want to visit: any random beautiful beach. But if you want it more precise: the filming took place in Thailand, mostly on Koh Phi Phi Lee, which is a small island situated south of Koh Phi Phi.
IMDB score: 6.6
Plot: A grad from the US has a pen pal from Germany, called Mieke. He thinks Mieke is actually Mike, a guy, so he tells her he never wants to speak to her again. When his friends tell him Mieke is actually a girls name, he regrets his actions and wants to go to Germany to apologize. He takes three of his friends on an epic roadtrip through Europe which brings them to London, Paris, Amsterdam, Bratislava, Berlin, and Rome.
Stars: Michelle Trachtenberg, some unknown actors and a very small supporting roll for Matt Damon.
This movie makes you want to visit: Not really a particular place, but it makes me want to go and do a road trip through Europe.
IMDB score: 6.6
Seven years in Tibet
Plot: An Austrian mountain climber called Heinrich Harrer, known as an arrogant and selfish guy, decides to leave his son and pregnant wife behind to climb in the Himalayas. When World War 2 starts, he falls into the hand of allied forces and is put in a POW camp. He escapes, together with Peter Aufschnaiter, and they make their way to the forbidden city of Tibet, where Heinrich befriends the Dalai Lama.
Stars: Brad Pitt, David Thewlis
This movie makes you want to visit: Tibet
IMDB score: 7.0
Plot: This is definitely an adventure movie, and not necessarily a travel movie. It’s about Lara Croft, who finds a secret clock, hidden in her house by her late father. It’s the key to find the two halves of the Triangle of Light, an object which gives its owner the power to control time & space. It’s Lara’s job to find the object before the illuminati does.
Stars: Angelina Jolie, Daniel Craig, Jon Voight
This movie makes you want to visit: Cambodia. Tomb Raider is indeed not one of those typical travel movies, but it was definitely one of my reasons to visit Angkor Wat in Cambodia, where a lot of the filming took place.
IMDB score: 5.8
